Occupational Therapy, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu

Occupational therapy department was established in 1985 inorder to provide rehabilitation services to the patients in the hospital. The occupational therapists carry out the functional assessment of patients, pre-vocational evaluation and vocational assessment on patients to ascertain the right method to apply in helping patients recover fast and function well in the society.

The department uses various activities as medium for treatment as against pharmacological interventions as used by Physicians, Nurses etc.Their key services are:

  • Social skill training
  • Stress management and psychosocial problems affecting daily functional performance
  • Activities of daily living training
  • Community integration
  • Vocational rehabilitation
  • Facilitation of normal sensory processing for normal adaptive behaviour and facilitation of normal development in children with disabilities.

They use various mediums like computer, sewing machines,music,art and craft, physical activities, group therapy, meditation, yoga and other mental stimulating games like scrabble, whot, Ludo, Monopoly, etc to stimulate patients to function well in their lives and be productive in their various communities and to the nation.

The department has continued to contribute it’s quota in the recovery of patients in this hospital which has impacted in their functional restoration and overall quality of life. Out-patients are also welcomed for progressive treatments.There has been several improvements in the department which includes the use of Information Communication Technology(ICT) which is strongly geared towards improving the recuperation level of the patients.
